The trip of a lifetime. Normally I'm a way too lazy to record life in a blog, but this trip was too unforgettable and I need to make sure it stays that way. So here we go. After dealing with a lot of bullshit in my life over the last year, I couldn't be more ready for an epic vacation. I was fortunate enough my family was going to the Hawaiian islands this summer of all places. I've never been overseas before and never been anywhere tropical, so it was a huge deal. Me being the adventurous ADHD kid trapped in a 21 year-old body I am, it felt like going to Disney Land for the first time when you're six years old. This was definitely a problem on the plane, where I miserably tossed and turned in anticipation to get the hell out of my seat. But we arrived in perfect timing to see the sunset blaze neon colors over the mystic islands in an breathtaking, ethereal way. It was just out of this world and looked too good to be true. That is until we touched down into our destination, Honolulu on the island of Oahu. The city reminded me of a mix between Vancouver and Los Angeles for some reason, a nice combo. We eventually made it to our condo on the front of Waikiki beach, the urban heart of Hawaii. I've seen some cool beaches in California, but this one totally takes the cake. This is one of the best beaches in the whole world. There is a huge fancy outdoor mall with all kinds of sick surf shops stretching for miles along the azure waters with pearly white beaches complete with gorgeous women. I immediately dove straight in the perfect-temperature waters and realized I would have a lot more fun with a surfboard like everyone else out there. Because I dig snowboarding and wake boarding SOOO much, I knew surfing was something I had to take up.
Since I was broke as usual my Dad gave us all a benjamin to spend at the mall during our trip, and I immediately blew it all on a week rental for a huge premium quality board. I surfed for hours everyday there and quickly realized that surfing is harder than it looks and can be pretty damn frustrating and exhausting. It had a lot to do with the surf itself, it was hard to catch the mostly mild waves compared to the monster waves that roll in during the winter. But it was well worth the effort. When you catch a decent wave, you're overcome by an ecstatic sensations that's hard to describe and hard to get doing anything else. You just feel so alive. I made a promise to myself to come back one day in the winter to surf the big bad waves of North Shore where the pros film to get the real deal. Surfing was one of the highlights of the trip, but it didn't take all the action. Since the islands are completely composed of cracky and porous volcanic rock, Hawaii has some wicked rock climbing. I didn't get the chance to do any lead climbing unfortunately, but I got to the best bouldering I've ever done in my life at the gorgeous Waimea Bay. Chillin right next the famous cliff was actually a friendly owner of an actual climbing gym from Canada, who instructed me and I was able to climb stuff I thought was way beyond my ability. It was invigorating and hard to stop. Climbing is an addiction. After I got my much needed fix there was some huge cliff diving right there to cool me off.
This was probably the most fun I packed into one day on the trip, but I didn't stop there. I love hiking just as much, and the next day I rode a bike for six miles and starting hiking the tropical rain forests of Manoa Falls all day. It was so epic I felt like I was in King Kong or Jurassic Park. The pictures don't really do much justice, you just have to be there to appreciate it. To round off my high octane activities of the trip I was lucky enough to go parasailing for a bit, which was a totally new experience for me. You just feel like your flying and you feel like your on top of the world. Probably not half as fun as sky diving, which I need to do someday soon, but it was fun. Most of my days were so action filled I was usually on empty by the time night came around and just crashed. But I saved some energy for a few nights because Honolulu has a pretty vibrant nightlife. One night I got pretty shit faced in a bar with a few chill locals I met and enthusiastically wobbled off to the clubs for pretty much the first time since I just turned twenty one, and the most exciting thing at the clubs back home is some one getting jumped I'm sure. So I want to the most popular club, Zanzabar, with lines snaking way out the building which hopefully meant it was the spot. As I waited in line about five random hookers came up to me to try and steal me from the clubs in order to have a "better time." I nicely turned down the first couple, but then told the rest to fuck off as I was pretty insulted they thought I would cough up two benjies out desperation to have sex that night. Then after waiting about forty five minutes in line, the bouncers told me I had to have long pants to get in. This is Hawaii, not France, what the fuck. So I headed back to get pants cause I didn't know what else to do then waited in line again for like ten minutes, only then for a different bouncer to tell me I can't wear a sleeveless shirt, no joke. So I left and never came back. But it gets better. I stop and ask a local guy who seemed chill what there is to do, and he told me he was having a party and to follow him back to his place. Believe it or not, this was a scam because he tried to seduce me into getting a blow job. Wow. That's it I'm going to bed. Disappointing night but a good story I guess. The next time I tried going out was a million times better. I went to this laid back dance club called Lotus Sound Bar, and danced my ass off until like four.
It was altogether a wild and exotic trip.
Of course time flies when you're having fun, and the ten days I was there went by a way too fast. It definitely changed me for good though. It made me realize just how much life and the world has to offer. Experiencing new places, new things, new ways of life, is what makes us learn and grow and eventually find ourselves. I don't know how I'm going to do it, but I decided I want to travel around the world in my life and do just that.
